This and other Spectrum Science interactives were created to accompany the 2008 release of a Holt, Rinehart and Winston textbook of the same name. The textbook serves as an introductory survey of all the main branches of science. Each interactive was developed by Second Avenue Software's subject matter experts and instructional designers to supplement the material in the textbook. This particular interactive, Forces and Rocket Science, enables users to explore Newton's laws of motion in an outer-space setting. In one section that illustrates Newton's Third Law of Motion - that every action has an equal and opposite reaction - users must navigate a space pod through a maze. To succeed, they have to understand that firing a rocket blast to the south causes the pod to move to the north. The interactive concludes with a space trader simulation, in which the user must apply this newfound knowledge to successfully deliver goods from one space station to another.
