Second Ave Produces Earth Science Virtual Investigations for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
ROCHESTER, NY – May 24, 2010 – Second Avenue Software, a Pittsford-based software development and services company specializing in content authoring, managed services, interactive software and media production, is producing Earth Science – Virtual Investigations, an educational software product for textbook publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
Second Ave had previously produced two sets of educational software interactive for the publisher’s Holt division in 2007: Spectrum Physical Science – Virtual Science Investigations, which covered physics, chemistry, astronomy and earth science; and Biology – Virtual Science Investigation, which covered life sciences. These interactives combine written and spoken narration with activities that test the player’s understanding of science concepts, and were bundled with Holt’s high school textbooks on CD-ROM. These Virtual Science Investigations won a 2008 Communicator Award of Distinction, and were a 2008 finalist for a Software & Information Industry (SIIA) CODiE award in the Best Science Instructional Solution category.
Based on this experience, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt selected Second Ave to develop similar interactives on the subject of earth science. Earth Science – Virtual Investigations covers topics such as climate, plate tectonics, and finding natural resources. Second Ave developed eight original interactives, based on manuscripts created by Second Ave’s subject matter experts. These will be combined with six existing interactives to form the final product.
Like its predecessors, Earth Science – Virtual Investigation was produced by Rochester-area talent, including programmers, artists, animators, subject matter experts, recording engineers and voice actors. The product will be provided with the physical and online versions of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s earth science high school textbook.
