Second Avenue Software Creates Virtual Biology Labs for K12, Inc.
ROCHESTER, NY – Second Avenue Software created six virtual biology labs this past November for award-winning educational software and curriculum developer Ką˛, Inc. The Ką˛ digital classroom experience offers each student individualized learning plans rich with engaging, interactive content. With the flexibility of Ką˛, students have the opportunity to succeed regardless of demographic or financial circumstances.
The Ką˛ high school biology curriculum features hands-on lab activities, with the aid of virtual scientific tools. After completing specific tasks, students are free to explore the lab environment and perform experiments in an unscripted, open-ended manner. This allows for the potential to make mistakes and receive realistic feedback on actions, as would occur in a traditional classroom setting. Second Avenue developed a consistent user interface to be used across all virtual labs. Students are able to use virtual microscopes, handle agar blocks and study root nodules in the Second Avenue produced labs. “The talents of Second Avenue allowed us to combine a friendly user interface with rigorous science in developing highly engaging interactive labs,” said Chris Frescholtz, director of the Ką˛ High School Program. “Second Avenue understood our needs immediately and allowed us to augment our students’ access to solid science labs through the digital medium.” Each simulation represents an overhead view of a working laboratory table, with scientific tools such as microscopes, slides and test tubes at each student’s disposal.
On the strength of these simulations, Second Avenue was chosen by Ką˛ to produce additional physical science virtual labs. The proposed labs will comprise of entirely new activities that cannot be performed in a traditional classroom setting, further allowing for innovation.
